BATHROOM TAPS DESIGN

A contemporary bathroom can be styled in 2-3 different ways, defined largely by the Bathing Equipment selected. Usually, the options below are mutually exclusive unless one budgets heavily or has an extraordinarily large space for the bathroom. The common feature in the below-given options is a Glass (preferably) or curtain partition that separates the bathing space from the toiletry and the wash basin space:

1. Bath Tub/ Jacuzzi based

2. Steam Room based

3. Diverter, Mixer or Tap operated

Once we have got the Tap Design of our choice, then we can plan for the wash basin that can be:

1. Pedestal-based, or

2. Shelf based

And the toilet, where the seat can be:

1. Wall hung, or

2. Floor Mounted,

While the flushing can be:

1. Using a Behind-the-Wall Cistern, or

2. Directly from the OH tank, using a Chrome Plated Concealed Button Operated Flush Valve (Metropol)

Apart from these, tiles have to match the colours of the walls and other sanitary ware chosen, while bath accessories like Toothbrush holders, soap dishes, toilet paper holders, glass shelves, corner shelves etc., have to match the shapes and finish of the fittings used in the Bath area and the wash basin (Qube, Opera, etc.). There can be two mirrors, one with magnifying powers and flexible mounting for shaving and make-up and the other a big glass wall mirror.

BATHROOM COLOUR IDEAS

Colour doesn’t play a significant role in the Major Bathroom of the house. Usually, colour is not the highlight as such for the Main Bathroom; the focus is more on the kind of fittings and other infrastructure in place to facilitate bathing and washing. Light colours, like White, Cream, Light Blue, etc., are non-intrusive and go in easily with the chosen sanitary ware and tiles. Only for kids' bathrooms, where pink and violet go as usual for girls, boys might prefer blue, orange and red to match their tastes.

SMART BATHROOM GADGETS

The modern Bathroom focuses more on glamour, features and convenience with respect to bath infrastructure. Body jets, nozzle sprays, big rain showers and their unique cleansing and rejuvenating features have led to a revolution that favours abundance and variety in water usage. The latest convenience that is catching on all over is digital, programmable water solutions, which, like smartphones, have the capacity to take the bathing process to unprecedented personalised yet complex levels, where the user can dictate temperatures, time cycles of the bath, flow rates and even types of flows.

BATHROOM FUNCTIONALITY & COMFORT

The main function of a Bathroom is to give a refreshing bath, a good place to wash hands and a good operational toilet seat. Comfort has to be built around these basic amenities based on the space and budget available to the user. Needless to say, the more space the user has, the more comfort can be built.

Comfort, if the space is small, can be built in the bathing systems. One can build flushing cisterns inside the wall, directly source water from the OH tank, and use a foldable water-hung WC. In the bathing area, similarly, one can use a Shower Panel, which occupies little space, yet can provide nozzle-based cleansing at multiple points of the body. Wash Basins can have bottle traps that take water drainage into the wall.

With bigger space, one can envision a larger variety of bath infrastructure, with Glass partitions, choice of Bathtubs, Shower Cabins or steam rooms, spa features, bath vanity-based wash basins, multiple bath accessories, etc.

TOILET DESIGN

On the flushing side, health faucets, butterfly jets, and toilet paper holders are essential for user comfort. A more creative mind can attach Mixers to the health faucet or butterfly jets to get comfortable temperature water. Grab Bars are essential for old people and kids, especially near the bath area and the toilet seat.

BATHROOM SAFETY

The most dangerous in a bathroom are caused by slippage and hot water scalding. One needs to therefore separate the bathing area from the toilet and wash basin, and tiles, too, should ideally have an anti-slippage element on the surface. The hot direction in mixers and single levers is clearly marked, so the user can easily open a tap on the colder or mixed water side; he just has to be aware of this.

BATHROOM ACCESSORIES

Conscious of the use, the plumber or architect must conveniently put in accessories like a soap dish, toilet paper holder, and butterfly/ health faucet handle. Towel racks and towel rails must be placed a little away from the bathing area. The bathing area needs to be screened from the rest of the bathroom. Moreover, conventionally toilet and wash basin should be near the door on opposite sides, while the bathing area should be furthest from the door around the opposite wall. All this is for bathroom ergonomics.

AERATORS & CERAMIC INTERNALS

Most of the taps are fitted in aerators nowadays, which help in 50% saving in water consumption while giving delightful flows. Digital faucets, Quarter Turn and other ceramic cartridge-based faucets already are easier to operate than conventional screw spindle-based taps. The trend is, like elsewhere, towards ease of use and the introduction of flexible, programmable controls in faucets, too.

BATHROOM PLUMBING

One can’t really makeover a bathroom as easily as other areas of the house. Due to the introduction of sophisticated bath equipment, one needs to, in most cases, relay the floor and tamper with the walls to reach out to the plumbing pipes every time bathroom refurbishing takes place.

Quickness can only happen here if what is being replaced is similar to what is being put in. For example, if one is using a Wall Mixer for bathing earlier and wishes to replace this system quickly, he only needs to go in for another. One can’t plan a Diverter instead for quickness while going for a steam room is a bit easier theoretically as these two only need a hot and cold outlet for operation. (Though aesthetically, it would be very difficult for a purist to imagine a bathtub or a steam room being used in the same area as a Wall Mixer before, since the ergonomics aren’t the same)

If a makeover is planned only by changing the tiles, then it is easier since only the surface of the bathroom is to be re-laid.
